Vincent Giarrano
Contemporary Realist Painter
Vincent Giarrano (b. 1960, Buffalo, New York) is an internationally recognized contemporary realist painter celebrated for his striking, evocative portrayals of modern urban life. Known for capturing quiet, sincere moments amidst the bustle of the city, Giarrano's work focuses heavily on contemplative portraits, dynamic cityscapes, and the intricate architecture of everyday environments.

Education and Early Career
Giarrano’s artistic journey began with self-guided drawing before he formally pursued his craft, earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1982, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University in 1985. Following his formal education, he spent several years living in New York City, establishing a highly successful career in illustration and working as a prominent comic book artist for major publishers like DC Comics, Marvel, and Dark Horse. Ultimately, his passion for traditional techniques drew him back to fine art and oil painting.

Artistic Vision and Style
Drawing profound influence from historic masters of representational painting such as John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Joaquin Sorolla, and Edward Hopper, Giarrano successfully updates classical realism for the twenty-first century.
His canvases frequently explore:

  • The Modern Cityscape: Capturing the energy, architecture, and texture of urban environments—particularly the cobblestones, cast-iron facades, and street scenes of New York City’s Soho district.

  • Introspective Portraits: Providing voyeuristic, tender glimpses of modern individuals—often young women—in moments of contemplation, whether lost in thought at a bustling bar or relaxing in a sunlit, rumpled apartment.

  • Naturalism: Emphasizing authentic, unforced narratives where beauty is found in the sincere, everyday experiences of his subjects.

Giarrano's masterful technique and compelling visual storytelling have earned him widespread recognition. His work has been exhibited in numerous prestigious institutions and competitions worldwide, including:

  • The National Portrait Gallery, London (BP Portrait Award)

  • The National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. (Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition)

  • The Fort Wayne Museum of Art (Contemporary Realism Biennial)
